AND THEY’RE OFF …..

.

What a month January has been.  We began as we have done for the last 10 years exporting weather starved British golfers to the Algarve – over 300 to be precise.

First to the tee was Tim Maxwell’s Maxitours Event, a fine bunch of gentlemen who took to the challenge of the courses at Quinta do Lago with relish and good humour. This good humoured but competitive tournament Culminated in a feast of the finest steak at Bovino restaurant. Such is the demand, that Tim is considering returning for not one, but two Maxitours events in 2024

Julie, Tim, Claire and Ian – Presentation Evening at Bovino

No sooner had we waved goodbye to Tim and his gang than we were dashing across town to prepare for the Lancashire Overseas Pro-Am.  Little did we know that this tournament was going to be more explosive than normal!

Was it the volatile mix of Scots, Northerners and Southerners in the same competition? No!

Was it the presence of exceptional young Pros snapping at the heels of the old guard? No!

The sparks to which I am referring came courtesy of the Portuguese National grid!!! Where a power surge took out the main and backup generator at our beautiful 5 star hotel.

Picture this……..150 golfers returning to their hotel, still scratching their heads at the pin positions and speed of the greens at the Quinta courses.  There is a mere 45 minutes of light left in the day, when Julie gets a call at 5pm to announce that we have to evacuate the hotel as there is no power, light or water.  The secrets of what happened next between Julie, her team and the hotel management can never be revealed to the uninitiated, but… in way that would have brought an audience to its feet at a David Copperfield Las Vegas show,  by 7pm 150 bemused but very happy and co-operative golfers were sat enjoying the hospitality of the beautiful Pine Cliffs Resort.

In fact, knowing that they had free drinks until 9pm our happy golfers drove the hotel staff to tears sinking 8 kegs of beer in a fashion never before seen by this establishment.

Pine Cliffs remained our home for the rest of an amazing tournament, where those young guns did indeed claim the day in the shape of our Professional winner Billy McKenzie.
